Chicken Run Shade Kit with 50% Shade Cloth
Give chickens a cooler place to rest, dust bathe, eat, and drink with a freestanding shade structure made for open poultry runs.
The included black 50% shade cloth helps reduce harsh sun exposure while still allowing air to move through the run. Unlike a solid roof, it creates shade without making the space feel closed in or trapping as much heat underneath.
Choose from a 10' x 10' or 10' x 20' footprint to cover a favorite resting area, feeding station, water station, or larger section of the run.
Why Add Shade to a Chicken Run?
Chicken runs can become extremely hot when they are fully exposed to the sun. Adding a dedicated shaded area gives the flock a more comfortable place to spend the hottest part of the day.
Shade can also help:
- Keep water from heating up as quickly
- Create a cooler area around feeders
- Protect resting and dust-bathing spaces from direct sun
- Make large, open runs more comfortable during summer
- Provide coverage where trees or natural shade are unavailable

Freestanding Design
Place the structure where shade is needed most without attaching it to the coop or existing run.
Breathable Shade Cloth
The 50% shade cloth filters direct sunlight while allowing airflow to continue through the poultry area.
Removable Coverage
Ball bungees make the cloth easier to install, adjust, and remove before winter or severe weather.
Reinforced Frame
Galvanized connectors and corner bracing help create a more rigid structure that can handle regular outdoor use.
Locally Sourced Frame Pipe
The kit uses standard fencing materials that can be purchased locally, helping reduce oversized shipping costs.

Suggested Frame Materials
10' x 10' Shade Structure
- Six 10-foot sections of 1-3/8-inch top rail
- Four 8-foot sections of 1-5/8-inch line post
Best for: Shading a targeted section of the run, such as the feeder, waterer, or dust-bathing area.
10' x 20' Shade Structure
- Ten 10-foot sections of 1-3/8-inch top rail
- Six 8-foot sections of 1-5/8-inch line post
Best for: Larger flocks, longer runs, or poultry yards with little natural shade.
Installation Tips
Watch the sun first. Position the structure where it will provide the most shade during the hottest afternoon hours.
Square the frame carefully. Proper alignment makes assembly easier and helps the shade cloth sit evenly.
Secure the corners first. Attach each corner before adding the remaining ball bungees.
Do not overtighten. The cloth should be secure but still have some flexibility.
Plan for wind. Additional anchors may be needed in open or exposed locations.
Remove for severe weather. Take the shade cloth down before heavy snow, extreme wind, or major storms.
Important
This kit is designed to provide shade only. It does not replace predator-proof fencing, overhead run protection, waterproof roofing, or a fully enclosed poultry shelter.
