Nesting Boxes

Nesting boxes give hens a clean, safe spot to lay so eggs stay uncracked and easy to collect.

Put boxes in the coop before pullets start laying (around 16–18 weeks) and aim for about 1 box per 3–4 hens; a common size is 12"×12" with a little lip to keep bedding in. Boxes help stop “hidden nests,” cut egg pecking, and keep eggs cleaner. For cleaning, toss out dirty bedding or pads, wipe the box with a poultry-safe cleaner, let it dry, and add fresh shavings or a nest pad; do a deeper scrub every few weeks. Tip: place boxes in a quiet, dim corner and keep them dry—hens like privacy.
