Heating Plates & Heat Lamps

Keep Chicks Safe with Heating Plates & Heat Lamps

Heating plates mimic a mother hen, giving steady, gentle warmth with low fire risk and lower energy use. Heat lamps can warm bigger spaces and are helpful in very cold barns or garages. If you use a lamp, pick a brooder-rated fixture with a guard, clamp it tight, add a back-up chain, and keep it well away from bedding. Put a thermometer at chick height—start around 95°F the first week and lower about 5°F each week. Choose a heating plate for safe, steady heat, a heat lamp when you need extra warmth or flexibility—many folks use both.
