Chicken Coops by Shape

Choosing a coop roofline comes down to your yard, weather, and style.

An A-frame is a simple triangle that sheds rain and snow fast and is budget-friendly, though wall space is shorter; a Dutch/Barn (gambrel) roof gives a tall “barn” look with lots of headroom for shelves and works well in snow and wind, often at a slightly higher cost; a Quaker roof has a taller front wall, shorter back, and a front overhang for nice curb appeal, extra window/door space, and good airflow; and a Lean-to (single slope) tucks neatly against a fence or wall, is easy to build, low-profile for HOAs, and sheds water one way—great for solar panels. Match the roof to your climate, add vents under the eaves, and plan overhangs or gutters to keep the run dry.
