Description

1/4" Hardware Cloth (36" x 100', 23-Gauge) — Protect Your Coop from Rodents & Predators

Keep your chickens safe with strong metal mesh that lets fresh air in but keeps pests out. This 1/4-inch grid hardware cloth helps block rats, most mice, snakes, raccoons’ paws, and weasels, so your flock sleeps safer and your feed stays cleaner.

Why it’s great for chicken coops

  • Stops pests at the wall: Tight 1/4" openings are small enough to keep out rats and most mice, plus small snakes and grabbing paws.

  • Tough & weather-ready: 23-gauge, hot-dip galvanized after welding for rust resistance and long life outdoors.

  • Cleaner, safer coop: Keeps wild animals from reaching birds and feed; reduces disease risk and stress.

  • Easy to cut & fit: Trim with tin snips; shape to vents, windows, and doors.

Roll size: 36" wide × 100' long (silver).
Material: Galvanized low-carbon steel wire.
Weight (approx. package): 41.5 lb (wear gloves; edges are sharp).

Where to use it on your coop

  1. Windows & vents (inside mount): Screw the mesh inside the framing so predators can’t pry it off.

  2. Run walls & doors: Replace chicken wire (which bends) with hardware cloth for real protection.

  3. Buried apron/skirt: Lay a strip of mesh 12" out flat on the ground around the coop/run and pin it down (or bury 8–12" deep). This stops diggers like rats and raccoons.

  4. Floor guard (optional): For high-risk areas, lay mesh under the run bedding to block tunneling.

  5. Gaps & chewed spots: Patch any opening ¼" or larger; add a door sweep so there’s no gap under doors.

How to install (simple steps)

  1. Measure & cut: Use tin snips; wear gloves and eye protection.

  2. Attach tight: Use exterior screws + fender washers (best hold) or heavy staples every 2–3 inches.

  3. Overlap seams: Overlap panels by 2 inches and tie with wire or add more screws for strength.

  4. Seal small cracks: Pack steel/copper mesh into gaps, then caulk or mortar over it.

  5. Finish the apron: Stake the 12" skirt with landscape pins and cover with soil or gravel.

Extra benefits

  • Better airflow, fewer smells: Vent safely year-round without open holes.

  • Protects feed: Pair with a treadle feeder so only your birds can open the lid—less feed for rodents.

  • Garden helper, too: Use leftovers to guard raised beds and block burrowing pests.

Bottom line: This 1/4" hardware cloth is a must-have for coop safety. Install it on vents, windows, runs, doors, and as a buried apron to keep rodents and predators out—and your flock healthy and calm.
