Now That They’ve Hatched… When Do You Move Them?

When to Move From Incubator → Brooder → Grow-Out Pen → Coop (By Species)

Hatching is only step one.

The real success comes from knowing when to move birds through each stage—before they get chilled, trampled, overcrowded, or stressed.

This guide gives you the basic timing for the most common species, plus the simple signs that matter more than the calendar.

The 4 Stages (Quick Overview)

Most backyard hatchers move birds through these stages:

  • Incubator (hatch + dry off)
  • Brooder (warmth + safety + learning to eat/drink)
  • Grow-Out Pen (space to feather out and build strength)
  • Coop / Outdoor Pen (weather-ready juveniles)

Move too early and birds can chill or fail to thrive. Move too late and you invite piling, ammonia buildup, feather picking, and uneven growth.

Stage 1: Incubator → Brooder (When to Pull Hatchlings)

After hatch, leave birds in the incubator until they are:

  • Fully dry and fluffed up
  • Standing steadily
  • Walking without wobbling

Most hatchlings can safely go without food and water during this window because they’re absorbing the remaining yolk.

Basic Timing (Incubator → Brooder)

  • Chickens: 12–24 hours after hatch
  • Coturnix quail: 6–12 hours after hatch
  • Ducks: 24–36 hours after hatch
  • Pheasants: 12–24 hours after hatch

Tip: If you open the incubator repeatedly during hatch, humidity drops fast. Try to move birds in batches instead of one at a time.

Stage 2: Brooder → Grow-Out Pen (The Move That Prevents Most Problems)

This is the transition that sneaks up on people.

A brooder feels roomy at day 2… and cramped at day 12.

Birds are ready to move out of the brooder when they are:

  • Mostly feathered (not just fluffy down)
  • Spending more time away from the heat source
  • Actively exploring and not piling for warmth

If you’re seeing crowding, edge-hugging, constant mess, or sudden pecking behavior, your brooder is usually past its useful stage.

Basic Timing (Brooder → Grow-Out Pen)

  • Chickens: 4–6 weeks
  • Coturnix quail: 2–3 weeks
  • Ducks: 3–5 weeks
  • Pheasants: 4–5 weeks

Watch the feathers: Age is a guideline. Feather coverage and behavior are the real “green light.”

Stage 3: Grow-Out Pen → Coop / Outdoor Pen (When They’re Weather-Ready)

Outdoor transitions shouldn’t be rushed.

Even a “mild” night can chill a juvenile bird if they’re not fully feathered or if the space is damp and drafty.

Birds are typically ready for the coop or outdoor pen when they:

  • Are fully feathered
  • Can handle room temperature overnight without heat
  • Are active and steady (not huddling constantly)

Basic Timing (Grow-Out → Outdoors)

  • Chickens: 6–8 weeks
  • Coturnix quail: 3–4 weeks
  • Ducks: 5–7 weeks
  • Pheasants: 6–7 weeks

Note on pheasants: Pheasants do best in a covered flight pen, not a standard backyard coop. They spook easily and can injure themselves if the space isn’t designed for it.

Outdoor Transition Tips (So the Move Doesn’t Backfire)

If you can, aim for a slow transition instead of a sudden switch.

  • Move birds during a stretch of mild weather
  • Provide wind protection and a dry, draft-free shelter
  • Use extra bedding the first week outdoors
  • Keep the space dry—damp bedding chills fast

A cold snap can undo weeks of healthy growth overnight, especially for smaller-bodied birds.

Simple Rule You Can Trust

Down = needs brooder heat.

Feathers = can start transitioning.

Fully feathered + stable at room temp overnight = ready for outdoors.

Final Thought

The incubator protects the embryo.

The brooder replaces the mother hen.

The grow-out pen gives birds the space to build feathers, muscle, and confidence.

The coop (or outdoor pen) is where they become truly weather-ready juveniles.

Healthy birds aren’t just hatched.
They’re transitioned—at the right time.
